No Small Things

There are no small things.

You might be wiping noses. Maybe you stopped at that guy’s office down the hall to ask about his weekend. You could be available to a teammate during hardship, or praying for a friend in need. You clean the break room at the office. Those things seem small, right?

Lately, the “small” thing for me has been picking up balls during UCCS’s volleyball practices. God has definitely opened a door for me here, but I’m not meeting weekly with the team to tell them about Jesus in a bible study. I’m not hosting pre-game FCA chapels. I stand around at practice with my hands at my side shouting a periodical, encouraging, “Yeah, Kelsey!” I bend down, pick up volleyballs, and fill carts - a student-manager’s job. It’s small.

In the first few weeks of serving the team this way, one of the athletes approached me to have coffee. Picking up volleyballs translated into a not-so-small conversation with her about the way that God loves her. In addition, God has allowed me to have a few big conversations with other people surrounding the volleyball team.

Sometimes I think “small” of what God has me doing that day to serve Him – sending a text message, an email, or having a coffee meeting with someone. God has brought me to the profound realization that these small things matter to Him. Our Father is very concerned with His lost children coming home. (Luke 15:11-32). His lost children might be in our own homes, across the hall, a locker down, or maybe in the next room. Some of his lost children wear business suits. Some of them wear a volleyball jersey and kneepads; others wear a whistle around their neck.

Please be encouraged today that the small thing you are doing matters to God, even though it feels insignificant. Sometimes reaching God’s lost children looks like cleaning the break room or, in my case, picking up volleyballs.

Small matters.
